there is a place where sad girls go

there is a place where sad girls go.

there is a queue that proceeds slow, where sad girls wait in line to surrender their heart to the security counter. “no emotions allowed”, the sign reads, and the sad girls are given a locker key to a locker where their hearts temporarily reside. it is a recycling centre. three bins: paper, glass, trash. paper for those paper-thin memories that they couldn’t bear to crush and throw away. glass for the broken shards puncturing their arteries, for the sharp voices and sharper words that haunt them on bad nights. trash for unwanted overthinkings, the thoughts that fill and rot in their minds. with their emotions out of the way, the sad girls empty their minds easily. it takes a few hours but they feel instantaneously lighter, laugh even, as everything is incinerated into nothing.

there is a place where sad girls go.

it is a library with good memories available on loan. shelves labelled by positive emotions – love, excitement, joy, pride, passion, content, tranquillity. there are sad girls huddled in every corner, devouring these memories as if they were their own. they hug these memories close to their hearts as they walk out of the library, back into reality.

there is a place where sad girls go.

it is a swimming pool where one cannot sink. they fling themselves inside, clothes and all, and revel in the way they float right back up. they are weightless, and the pool is full of sad girl tears but their faces are wet anyway so no one can really tell and no one really cares. for once they don’t feel like they’re drowning.

there is a place where sad girls go.

it is out of the hemisphere of the earth, in a small black hole, for the even smaller souls. the sad girls put on astronaut suits and suspend themselves in space. they breathe in their own carbon dioxide and their helmets will soon fog up and slowly they will drift off into an eternal slumber.

there is a place where sad girls go.

under their blankets, under their skin, under the depths of their darkness. it is a place with an entrance but no exit.

there is a place where sad girls go.

a place where happy people will never know.
